Bakersfield Billboards

ADI is calling on residents of Bakersfield, California, to stay away from circuses with wild animals with six new billboards that went up across the city on August 11th. The bold message “Stop Circus Suffering” appears with three images from ADI’s investigations of a circus lion and tiger in tiny, barren cages and an elephant being viciously struck with a bullhook. The billboards are timed to coincide with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus coming to Bakersfield from September 4th-7th, 2014.

ADI’s billboards were made possible by the generous donation of a young supporter, Sean Esla, who used his childhood savings to pay for the billboards and show residents the abuse that circus animals suffer.

Sean Esla: “I know there are lots of kids like me who love elephants, lions, and tigers, but they just don’t know how badly they are treated at the circus. I hope when they see these pictures, they will want to learn more and help the animals by going to animal free circuses.”

“Most people are compassionate and would never knowingly support the abuse of animals,” said Jan Creamer, ADI President. “But many are unaware of the hidden cruelty, for just a few minutes of entertainment. ADI’s new billboard campaign aims to lift the curtain and tell ordinary Americans the truth. Like many others, we believe they will walk away from these shows.”

I went to the circus only once at about 5 years of age and very saddened by the experience. Even as a baby I could see the animals performing were under duress. Walking past their cages thinking how small. Looking around with wonder why I wasn’t enjoying myself the way everyone else seemed to be, watching them perform their tricks. I never went to the circus again, and all my life was not interested in anything that had to do with animal performances. This antiquated custom needs to be banished to our past.

That’s one of my favorite sayings from a very wise man however if true, the US is in extreme moral decline .The list of chronically abused animals in this country is LONG . People either don’t know or don’t care or simply completely fail to see the importance in others lives simply because they’re not our species, we’re all animals. It’s so very heinous, please write and /or petition your state representitives demanding far stricter laws against the abuse of animals! The ONLY state that has good abuse laws is Massachusetts, and they just passed the Puppy Doe Law in memory of dear Puppy Doe, aka Kiya, a brutally tortured young pit mix found in Quincy in 2013. Still, the law only covers companion animals. There needs so desperately to be a strict law passed on the Federal level which would help protect ALL living beings!

Please stop the horrendous suffering of animals in circuses by making it a law No animals allowed in circuses. I saw first hand in San Diego august 7 2014
Lions stuck in small cages. Moaning elephants standing on concrete chained up It is criminal to do this to animals. What kind of human beings are we to treat an animal like this?? Let these wild animals free to go to a
Sanctuary like performing animal welfare society and experience living their life in natural surroundings of trees grass lakes befitting their species and never again controlled beaten starved again by cruel humans

  9. Linda Phelan · 11 August 2014 at 7:26a

No animal should be kept in captivity for human entertainment or profit, it is unethical and inhumane. Worse yet, these animals suffer horribly at the hands of their abusers and live hellish lives of torture and captivity. It is WRONG!

  10. Shawna Summerville · 11 August 2014 at 7:26a

Animals are not ours to profit from while they live their entire lives in suffering. Contrary to what some humans believe, not everything is ours for the taking. It’s about time our civilization became just that, civilized.

    1. Carol Givens · 11 August 2014 at 7:26a

Excellent comment! What makes so many humans think we have any right to literally ruin these animals lives, just because we can ?They take them from all family, to the Elephant in particular, this is the same as if they took one of our children for us never to see again, to be beaten, caged, chained and exploited for the rest of their lives. It’s so cruel and wrong on every level!

Stop using animals for amusement of humans. This is nothing but abuse and cruelty. Who do you think you are to have the right to treat these beautiful animals in such a disgraceful way. You should be ashamed. They have the right to live their lives free in their natural habitat.
