Stop Circus Suffering

Week of action against circus suffering!

Help end the suffering of wild animals in circuses across the US and take part in our Week of Action Against Circus Suffering from July 21st – 25th, 2014. Join in and spread the word!

Tigers in a trailer. Clyde Beatty Cole Brothers Circus.

We need YOU to help wild animals that are caged, chained and confined in circuses across the US. Make a date for your diary and take part in our Week of Action Against Circus Suffering from July 21st – 25th, 2014. Behind the bright lights and colorful costumes, the traveling circus hides a horrible secret. Wild animals are forced to endure confinement; long, arduous journeys; brutal control methods; and physical violence. The tools of the circus trade – used to control and coerce wild animals to perform unnatural tricks – are bullhooks (a heavy bar with a sharpened point and hook), stun guns, electric prods, metal bars, whips, deprivation of food and water, and intimidation. Circuses with wild animals are not safe for people either.  Members of the public and circus staff have been maimed and even killed. Dramatically illustrating the risks people face, ADI has recently released undercover footage of an explosive fight between elephants used for children’s rides. Workers try unsuccessfully to control them with bullhooks, metal bars and stun guns. Take part in our Week of Action Against Circus Suffering! From July 21st – 25th groups and individuals across the US will be flooding Congress with calls and emails urging their Representatives to support and co-sponsor the Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act (H.R. 4525), a landmark federal bill introduced by Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA) that aims to protect elephants, tigers, bears and other wild animals from being forced to perform in traveling circuses, by prohibiting their use. Please join them!

  • Send an email message to your Representative in Congress (you can look up their details here). Keep your message brief, polite, and ask them to support and co-sponsor the Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act, H.R. 4525.
  • Follow up with a quick call to Congress. Call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask for your Representative’s office.  See below for our calling tips. (Please do not call your Senator at this time as a companion bill in the Senate has not yet been introduced.)
  • We want to hear from you! Please contact ADI and let us know the response you get from your Representative so that we can effectively advance this important legislation.
  • Find out more about TEAPA, our campaign to stop circus suffering in the US and how you can get involved

Tips for calling your Representative:

  • Identify yourself and ask to speak with the staff/aide assigned to issues regarding wildlife and the humane care of animals.
  • Take note of their name and ask the aide to please pass along a message to your Representative that you are encouraging them to support and co-sponsor the Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act (H.R. 4525).
  • You may want to share some examples of why this bill is needed:
    • H.R. 4525 is necessary because no amount of expensive regulation will protect a wild animal in a traveling circus from a life of ongoing physical and social deprivation, nor will regulation protect the public from animal escapes and diseases like TB that can be transmitted from animals to people.
    • Wild animals in traveling circuses endure confinement; long, arduous journeys; brutal control methods and physical violence.
    • Traveling circuses pose a serious threat to public safety. Circus workers and members of the public, including children, have been killed and maimed by circus animals, and lions, tigers and elephants have all escaped.
    • Investigations have revealed circus animals are trained through domination using weapons including bullhooks, whips and electric shocking devices.
    • H.R. 4525 is an important animal protection measure that will relieve an enormous amount of suffering, will save resources and protect people.

    1. Dawn · 10 July 2014 at 10:07a

Absolutely agree, we should organize a day of sadness, to reflect on the sad life of wild animals “stolen” from their home and familys into a life of cruelty and pain by the circus people.

    This must stop

  17. Carol Crunkhorn · 10 July 2014 at 10:07a

This is shameful and teaches children only how callous and cruel humans can be towards other creatures. There is no justification for forcing wild animals to behave in ways that are completely alien to them, simply to entertain people and make profits for the circus owners. We want to see animal based circuses banned and education on the ethical treatment of animals encouraged.

  18. Sarah Reynolds · 10 July 2014 at 10:07a

I can’t even bring myself to watch the video. Every strand of my being cringes with pain and sadness every time I see such blatant disregard for the well being of animals and humans . If I had a large property I would take every one of those poor animals and give them the life they deserve. I am sending out positive thoughts to stop this suffering, that one day animals will be held in the same regard as humans. EQUAL

  19. simone maes · 10 July 2014 at 10:07a

    NO ANIMALS IN CIRCUS PLEASE

  28. astrid hilfer · 10 July 2014 at 10:07a

Please stop the use and abuse of animals in circuses in all cities, towns, suburbs, everywhere. If the circuses are not allowed to use animals in town they simply move them to another location where they can be used. The abuse is horrific and only you can help it be stopped.

  42. Elsie Nicholls · 10 July 2014 at 10:07a

Animals are not our slaves, they are free spirits and should remain so, cruelty begins when they are enslaved and forced to perform unnatural acts through very cruel acts by trainers and handlers, these people need to hang their heads in shame, as they are the lowest of the low with hearts of stone. They are empowered by their love of power, greed, and money. Please do not attended any form of animal entertainment or rides, think about the suffering these animals have to endure for your pleasure

    1. Irene Schoeller · 10 July 2014 at 10:07a

These are lovely creatures forced to perform so WAYYYY out of their element. How dare people expect this of them. How would ‘you feel’?

  52. Judy Flanagan · 10 July 2014 at 10:07a

Everyone and all zoos, circuses, and places where wild animals are kept are taking a fresh look at how they treat animals. With social media being right there when ‘things’ happen, the world knows about it in real time. There is no place to hide to do what has been done to animals in the past, like rapes, whips, chains, bullhooks, canes, starving animals, and all the rest of pain mankind has placed upon the animal kingdom. Now is the time to rethink, seek safe sanctuaries, and move live animals to the safe sanctuaries and redeem yourselves for the cruelty you’ve caused for many years.

  53. leigh Anna hernandez · 10 July 2014 at 10:07a

“Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” Albert Einstein

“We must fight against the spirit of conscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things, humanity will not find peace.” Albert Schweitzer, Born January 14, 1875

This brutality against the circus animals needs to STOP. The circus is perpetuating CRUELTY to animals when they mistreat animals in order to “ENTERTAIN” children. This is not ENTERTAINING! This is inhumane, abusive and 100% DISRESPECT to the animals.
