Stop Circus Suffering

UPDATE:

Championed by ADI, Nosey’s Law was signed by Governor Murphy on December 14, having previously passed both the Assembly and Senate on October 29. With this move, New Jersey has made history by becoming the first US state to pass legislation banning the use of wild and exotic animals in circuses.

PREVIOUSLY:

On October 29, 2018, New Jersey became the first US state to pass a ban on wild animal circus acts. The Assembly voted 71/3/3 and the Senate 36/0, sending Nosey’s Law (S1093/A1923) to the governor’s desk – the final step to securing this historic ban. Governor Murphy has previously noted his support for Nosey’s Law.

In May, the New Jersey Senate Economic Growth Committee voted unanimously (5-0) to pass Nosey’s Law (S1093/A1923) out of committee. In June, the New Jersey Senate voted unanimously (37-0) to pass Nosey’s Law (S1093/A1923). The bill was voted out of committee on October 22 before it headed to the Assembly floor.

January 2018: Nosey’s Law fell at the final hurdle – but victory is in sight. New Jersey Governor Christie has failed to sign (“pocket vetoed”) the bill to ban exotic animals in circuses throughout the state. However, we must not be disheartened – it is not unusual for animal protection legislation that provides permanent change, ensuring no animals are left behind, to go through several attempts before we win. The animals need us to pick ourselves up! The trailblazing New Jersey bill secured overwhelming support in both the Assembly and Senate. The new governor and legislative session begin this month (Senate quorum on Jan. 22nd; Assembly Jan 29th), and Senator Raymond J. Lesniak and Assemblyman Raj Mukherji have a new bill ready to be presented, and ADI has presented proposed bill language to the sponsors to further refine the language. It is always disappointing to come so close, but that’s the reason we know victory is within reach in New Jersey – we must not give up. Ever. Ever. Similar state bills are pending in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, and Hawaii, as well the federal bill, the Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act (TEAPSPA, HR1759), which would ban such acts nationwide.
