Stop Circus Suffering

Back the British circus ban!

Show the British Government that you won’t give up for the animals until the ban is won.

Show the British Government that you won’t give up for the animals until the ban is won.

Two years after the Government promised a ban on wild animals in circuses and the animals are still waiting.  These animals need your help – please don’t give up on them.

On Friday 27th February for the ELEVENTH time ADI will be supporting the tabling of the Wild Animals in Circuses Bill in the House of Commons.  This is the Government’s own Bill – the one that many people believe has already been passed – presented as a Private Members Bill.  The problem is it takes just one person to object and it will fall, and that has happened ten times with three Conservative MPs blocking the Bill.

There are less than 35 days left of parliamentary time before the General Election, but there is still time for the ban to become law.

There is overwhelming public support for the ban.  The majority of MPs support the ban.  The Prime Minister and Lord de Mauley both say they support the ban.  So we need your help for another push to end the circus madness.  Please do everything you can – SHOW THEM YOU CARE – send emails, write letters and telephone.  Be polite, but be determined.

ADI has repeatedly exposed the brutal training methods, the severe confinement and constant travel these animals endure.  It’s time it stopped and the Government promised it would stop.

There is very little time left – but with a ban with such clear political and public support there are no excuses.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION TODAY!

  • Contact William Hague MP, Leader of the House of Commons, and ask him to allocate parliamentary time to the Wild Animals in Circuses Bill.
  • Contact Prime Minister David Cameron and ask him to fulfil the promise to end the use of wild animals in travelling circuses and ensure Parliamentary time is given to the Wild Animals in Circuses Bill.
  • Contact your MP – in person if you possibly can! – remember they probably support the Bill, but we need their help: ask them to back the Bill and press the Government to allocate time for it;  and ensure their party is committed to a ban in their manifestos
  • Make a donation – ADI is securing lasting change for circus animals around the world, help us do more!
  • Sign our petition calling on David Cameron to back the circus bill (see also our Care2 petition)
  • Contact your local candidates ahead of the General Election and ask for their views on the ban. If you need assistance identifying candidates, please contact the ADI office.
  • If you are a member of a political party, please contact the team preparing the manifesto and ask that a pledge to ban wild animals in circuses is included. If you need assistance with this, please contact the ADI office.
  • Spread the word – share our posts on facebook and twitter #notgivingup #circusban

You can tell by the look in their eyes that the torment, hitting with sticks to break their spirit, has worked…. It is a shame that a country does not intervene as such is the only hope for the elephant or lion or any other poor creature that performs in the circus for that matter…

    1. SIIRI ANTON · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

This must be stopped !!!! It is a shame for the whole of humanity.

    2. Marianne Mc Donald · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

Please ban animals from circuses. It is not natural for them to be confined and forced to perform. They are constantly travelling and exposed to man made hazards. It is a cruel and unnatural way to live. Thank you.

Sad they live in a cage … Starved and beat to make ignorant people smile

Shame on the Tory MP who stopped this animal freedom bill – for the NINTH time

  11. gail · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

the animals are cruely treated and the look in this lions eyes says it all
So many people want to have this end, the confined spaces, the beltings, the mismanagement of ALL animals needs to be stopped and the remaining of them all put out to sanctuaries to live a comfortable life in surrounds that would be more comfitable for them
They suffer inhumane treatments from electric shocks, beatings etc and not ONE,TWO or THREE people should stand in the way of setting them free

  12. Pat Howarth · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

unbeleivable that this still has not been passed, stand by your british animal lovers and get this through parliament. It makes it look like your government does not care about animal welfare

  15. Athena Bernal · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

The circus is hideous and cruel to wild animals, leaving them abused and a miserable existence. I support the ban of using animals in the Circus in the UK as well as everywhere else! Wild animals need to be in the wild!

  16. Colleen Jeffery · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

These animals deserve to free as God intended not locked up in cages 365 days of the year and kept from their families.. humans need to reverse the situation…let them alone..

  17. Janine Kindon · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

Wild animals are exactly that … wild! They should NEVER be kept in small cages, forced to carry out tricks, and used a pure entertainment for people, and worse of all mistreated and starved. Stop this suffering now! Stop circuses from using animals NOW!!

  19. V.hutchinson · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

The Circus is not an animal show, for them to be dragged about and kept in cages.. Beaten to perform pathetic tricks and mal treated.. Nobody wants this performance anymore. Its cruel, out dated and sick abuse of beautiful wild animals…

  20. Paula Carlson · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

This a shameful behavior that so very cruel to the animals that mankind has rendered helpless. It must stop immediately.

  21. Debbie Bryan · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

Its time we stop using any Animal for our entertainmemt! Its cruel to see them kept in such small enclosures ,& whips being used ! The people who think its ok ,should live the life of the Animals for a year! Also where has compassion & empathy gone ???

  22. Joanne Hunt · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

i stand for all the wild animals.. Let all the animals go free in jungles where they belongs.. They don’t belongs to the cages at the circuses at all. Thanks

  23. marta · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

seeing these big cats being used as entertainment, and being hit with the trainers whip, is just teaching more and more children to have no respect for animals. Cruelty to all animals is on the rise. The RSPCA cannot cope or afford to prosecute and neither can local authorities so people get away with this horror. Cameron promised this cruelty would end and now has to stick to his words and no more talk of licenses. my only concerns are that the animals aren[t sold on to countries thatr don’t have bans in place. This has to also be dealt with in the Bill.

  24. Fern Yates · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

Please ban circuses with animals – they are not ours for entertainment. They are sentient beings who need to be respected and be released into sanctuaries to continue their lives as God intended and not man.

the torment, hitting with sticks to break their spirit, has worked…. It is a shame that a country does not intervene as such is the only hope for the elephant or lion or any other poor creature that performs in the circus for that matter…

  30. Inge Dueholm · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

Wild animals should be in the nature – not in places, where they should entertain people. That is cruelty.

  31. Elaine Tselikis · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

Circuses are unnatural “environments” and are prisons that enslave, torment and cause intense, continuous suffering for intelligent, aware animals who were meant to be free and wild. These types of circuses are vestiges of Roman gladiator times and do not belong in the 21st century. These animals need to be moved to viable, quality sanctuaries. The modern circus needs to focus 100% on human skill and performers, NOT using animals to perform unnatural “acts” for sadistic and ignorant “entertainment.” NO animals in circuses!

  32. Raymond bath · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

“Judge the decency of a country, in the way they treat their animals”
The first, and only, circus I have ever been to, was in the UK (taken by my Father, when I was very young), and I vowed never to go to one again. It was the most upsetting experiences I could imagine. The humiliation, the tormenting, the lack of respect, the bullying, and the wiping away of dignity of such magnificent beasts, was truly upsetting and it gave me nightmares. I’ve hated clowns every since too. We are not in the 1800’s now, this is truly barbaric. Man controlling another species, a weaker species, has to stop.

BASTA CIRCHI, BASTA UMILIARE, far soffrire I POVERI ANIMALI!

  81. Louise Caig · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

Circuses don’t need animals – humans can and do give amazing performances which are way more exciting than watching sad, depressed animals do demeaning tricks under duress. Underneath the glitz and theatricals of the show are a lifetime of bullying and abuse to break the animals spirits and force them to entertain us. WE don’t need this, and the animals certainly shouldn’t have to do go through what they do for our enjoyment.

  82. Jennifer Hurlburt · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

Enough! Stop the torture and abuse. Animals do not deserve this, they should live as animals, free!

How do you expect your people to believe anything you say at all?? Who, what, and how much are the special interests putting in your back pockets, or in particular the polititian who continues to try to make a name for himself.. You are a disgrace..You’ll be remembered all right..as the man who wanted to keep brutality alive against laws that were already passed. What planet is that guy from anyway.. Does he love seeing animals suffer? Let’s put him in a cage for everyone to see..Respective of his size of course.. That would be about the size of a small bathroom in human accomodations.. Sicko!

Leave them in the wild where they belong with their families

  121. Sergio Gutierrez · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

No matter what everybody (or even the majority) says, it its a nauseating shame that just three MP’s can stop the bill. Very likely they have some vested interest. They should be named, so everyone will know their names come the next election, and boot them out of the House.

The animals are treated cruel and it is unfair!

  127. Michelle Kleer · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

i completely disagree with the use of wild animals in circuses and because of this will never attend a circus neither have my children ever been to a circus because of this. Wild animals belong in the wild and are not for selfish ‘humans’ to make money from!

  131. Christin · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

Wild animals in circuses? Don’t you see that’s just so 19th century. I thought England wanted to be a modern country. It’s a strong act for a country and a strong act of humanity to ban wild animals in circuses, and it’s a long overdue relief for being that were never ever meant to live in a cage and suffer for entertainment. It has nothing to do with a civilised society. So please use your power to do something genuinely good and just for those animals and also, for mankind – as we live in a globalized world and as the whole world is watching.

  132. Marnie Hickman · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

    Barbaric!

  138. Professor Barry Spurr · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

Performing animal circuses are an anachronistic barbaric abuse of animals that no civilised, enlightened, progressive, compassionate society should allow. They should have been banned years ago.

  139. C Marais · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

Animals in Circuses? How can one still do and believe to do this at this day and age? Haven’t they learn anything? This is pure cruelty. Don’t do to other (including animals} what you won’t do to yourself. Just imagine their suffering and pain if you can and still have a heart or soul left in you!

  140. Benita Deere-Koch · 20 January 2015 at 10:43a

Please free the animals and END this abuse – THEIR SUFFERING for HUMAN GREED!
