Stop Circus Suffering

Animal Welfare Bill to be unveiled today, coinciding with increased calls to ban animal circuses

ADI has run a long campaign concerning the Animal Welfare Bill and will be preparing commentary on the latest draft as soon as copies are available.

Animal Defenders International (ADI) has run a long campaign concerning the Animal Welfare Bill and will be preparing commentary on the latest draft as soon as copies are available. The Bill is expected to be published in Parliament today (14.10.05).

Jan Creamer, Chief Executive ADI: “We await with baited breath what could be the most important piece of animal protection legislation in decades. Has the Government had the courage to really push forward animal protection, by calling time on an outmoded practice like the animal circus? Or will this great opportunity be missed?”

ADI MORI poll findings released today says NO to circus animal cruelty

The MORI Poll commissioned by ADI reveals:

  • 80% say ban all wild animal circus acts.
  • 65% say ban all animal circus acts.
  • 90% against whipping and beating when training circus animals.More than twice as many people now visit animal-free circuses as opposed to those with animals.

Norman Baker, Shadow Environment Secretary for Liberal Democrats told ADI: “There is no place in a civilised society for the use of wild animals in circuses. The needs of these animals and the needs of circuses are incompatible. In the twenty first century, surely it’s time to pull the plug on wild animals in circuses and the government should use the forthcoming Animal Welfare Bill as a vehicle to achieve that.”
