Stop Circus Suffering

Please take action for circus animals in Britain today!

Circus bill launched to show of unity

On September 3rd, 2014 Animal Defenders International, joined by social justice campaigner Peter Tatchell and supportive MPs stood united with Jim Fitzpatrick MP outside Parliament. Unable to stand by as the Government continues to stall on its promise to ban wild animals in circuses Mr Fitzpatrick, working with ADI, has taken action for the animals and introduced a bill to end such acts. We hope you will too.

Please join us in taking action for circus animals.

ADI has led the campaign to consign the use of wild animals in circuses to the history books and over the summer we have continued to keep up the pressure. With the damning footage secured by our undercover investigations, and scientific evidence, no one can be left in any doubt that the circus is no place for wild animals and that their suffering will only stop once the ban has been won.

Although the animals suffer in silence, behind the scenes, they are being given a powerful voice. An army of celebrities, MPs and people like you are championing their cause. We have also brought together animal groups to send a united message to Parliament that the ban that has been promised for several years must finally be passed.

On September 1st, ADI spearheaded an open letter to David Cameron urging him to support Jim Fitzpatrick’s bill and ensure that it is given time to pass. Ricky Gervais,  Dame Judi Dench and Brian Blessed have also spoken out and in support of the bill.

We now need you – and your friends and family – for what could be the final push in winning the circus ban that we have all fought so very hard for.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION TODAY!

Urge your MP to back the bill to ban wild animals in circuses at its second reading – contact your MP here

Sign our petition urging the Prime Minister to back the new bill (thousands have already signed via Care2)

On behalf of the animals, thank you for taking action to stop circus suffering in Britain.

UPDATE

Following its launch on September 3rd, the Bill had its Second Reading on September 5th however it was blocked by Andrew Rosindell MP and a new date was set, October 17th. Sadly, Mr Rosindell blocked the Bill again. The next Second Reading took place on October 24th, which was again blocked, this time by Phillip Davies. The Bill was blocked by Christopher Chope MP at its Second Reading on November 7th, November 21st, November 28th, December 5th, January 9th, January 16th, January 23rd and on 27th February. The Bill was blocked for a twelfth and final time on 6th March 2015.

No animals in circus, specially the one we call “wild”; I think attractions are enough in a circus without often “poor” shows with animals.

    1. Michael McKenzie · 3 September 2014 at 12:14a

I fully endorse the end of this demonically blind practice of exploiting animals for mankind’s carnal pleasure… Let the ban begin now.

  2. astrid hilfer · 3 September 2014 at 12:14a

There’s just too much cruelty and abuse involved in training the animals. Also, they are caged or restrained in horrific ways. Please let your humanity show and not your lack of concern. Please ban the use of wild animals in circuses and anywhere animals are exploited.

  3. Julie Didas · 3 September 2014 at 12:14a

Let the animals go! They are not interested in “performing” and you need to figure out some other form of entertainment! Enough!! This ends NOW!!!!

I am aware that the British Royal Family do good work throughout the World in relation to poverty etc but hey what about animals – they also deserve attention as they cannot speak for themselves but just silently suffer. People can be in a circus by choice, animals have no voice. This is just plain wrong, the treatment is horrendous… Even as a child i hated circuses.

  67. gennaro daria · 3 September 2014 at 12:14a

Circus give me sadness. Because I see animals sad. Forced in acting stupid things. Dangerous for their health. Their dignity. I thing that animals have thoughts. Feelings. Emotions. Can feel joy and sorrow. Sadness and happyness. And I think: if I’m able to proof all these things, if I’m sad, tired, angry if someone wants keeping me sad, teased, humiliated…I don’t see any right reason for keeping animals that did not me anything of bad just in these conditions! It’s already happened that stupid people said me “yes but if a lion wants killing you, you will say again in your last minute all these things?” I have always told in my answer “I can avoid this. If I want see wild animals free, can do it in the better safety’s conditions”.
    I WANT ANIMAL FREE

  79. Louise Berry · 3 September 2014 at 12:14a

It is so important that a ban is impose on wild animals in circuses. I cannot think of one single reason why this should not go ahead – it is very traumatic for the animals involved, completely unnatural and I cannot understand why people find this cruelty entertaining. It has no place in 2014.

  118. Chrystine Vernon · 3 September 2014 at 12:14a

This is disgraceful, this barbaric practice should be banned. SHAME ON ANYONE WHO SUPPORTS ANIMALS IN CAPTIVITY.

  119. Sue WATSON · 3 September 2014 at 12:14a

I, like many thousands of other people, think that it is high time that the cruel and unnecessary practice of having wild animals in circuses is brought to an end. I have been informed by a member of the conservative party that the government prides itself on the animal welfare standards in this country. Really? Compared to which other countries animal welfare standards? Iran? Romania? The UK still has far to go to improve the standard of welfare for resident animals. The government has an ideal opportunity to prove that it does take animal welfare seriously by banning wild animals in circus acts. That will do nicely for starters. Wild animals do NOT belong in circuses.

  120. Nereda Leary · 3 September 2014 at 12:14a

Disgusting, circuses are out of date and cruel. People are now realising that wild animals are always wild animals and need to be in their natural environments, not in small pens and cages.

  121. Marcus Rheade-Edwards · 3 September 2014 at 12:14a

The constant blocking of this VERY important bill my MPs playing silly political games is an absolute disgrace !!!!! every last one of them should be totally ashamed of them selves !!!!
I have protested outside of Peter Jollys Circus and seen for my self first hand the shocking conditions that the beautiful big cats are expected to have to suffer and endure 24 hours a day 365 days a year, I have witnessed pacing and swaying and its disturbing at the very least.
David Cameron and the conservative party, and anyone else standing in the way of the ban progressing should be very ashamed of them selves.
One thing is for sure, there will be thousands of us who will most certainly NOT voting conservative in the next general election!!!
THE POOR ANIMALS NEED THIS BAN ASAP.

  122. Geraldine Daly · 3 September 2014 at 12:14a

Shame on the politicans that are blocking this ban. The torture and suffering of beautiful animals in circuses at the hands of cruel barbaric handlers, continues because of them. How can they sleep at night. SHAME

  123. Judi Baker · 3 September 2014 at 12:14a

Stop this and other atrocities against animals. They deserve the same love, caring and respect as humans. We dont treat humans this way. Have the guts and stop this rather than only caring about the money.

Stop animals having to perform in circuses! They have a miserable life, living in cramped cages, beaten into submission to entertain people, and often neglected when it comes to their health. Free the animals to sanctuaries, where they can live as free a life as is possible.

circus, is evil to animals, they should be free or kept in a sanctuary to live a free quality life. in a circus, they are secretly beaten to perform, and driven mad by being chained up all the time, and having no life, this is not natural for them to do, so it not only hurts with the beatings but emotionally they are driven mad by evil humans, ban all the circus

PLEASE STOP CIRCUS ANIMAL CRUELTY…HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE IN THEIR PLACE…
THE ROOT OF EVERYTHING THAT IS WRONG IN THE WORLD TODAY IS THE FACT THAT WE AS HUMANS VALUE THE LIVES OF ANIMALS SO MUCH LESS THAN OUR OWN…GREED IS ALSO A FRONT RUNNER…THE TWO RUN HAND IN HAND…

  131. Heidi Mckearney · 3 September 2014 at 12:14a

we are standing in unity here on this- pay attention- animal rights are becomming big- don’t be on the bad wagon of prehistoric and barbaric mind set- when it comes to pass that we’ve made a huge mistake in how we treat other species….

  133. Barb · 3 September 2014 at 12:14a

    PLEASE STOP THOUS CRUELTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  134. Alexandra Wild · 3 September 2014 at 12:14a

Why is this still happening? We know enough about animal behavior to know this is wrong. I think it says more about the sick behaviour of human beings.. Stop this practice.
