Sea lions to suffer in Duffy’s circus act
Duffy’s Circus – one of the few circuses still to perform with wild animals in Ireland – has announced plans to introduce a new sea lion act this season.
Duffy’s Circus – one of the few circuses still to perform with wild animals in Ireland – has announced plans to introduce a new sea lion act this season.
Sea lions are highly intelligent and social animals who regularly dive hundreds of meters underwater to hunt in the wild –a fundamental, natural behaviour that will be denied them in the circus.
Their unsuitability in this environment has been acknowledged by the Swedish Animal Welfare Agency which has recommended that sea lions not be permitted in circuses, since their swimming needs cannot be provided for.
Take action
If you live in Ireland, please speak out when Duffy’s comes to town. Organise a protest and ask your council to introduce a local ban – let us know and we can promote and contact councilmembers.
Together we can stop circus suffering in Ireland.
