Stop Circus Suffering

Portugal has passed a new law banning the use of wild animals in circuses!

In October 2005 ADI launched a major Stop Circus Suffering campaign in Portugal, with our campaign partner ANIMAL.

Portugal’s General Department of Veterinary (DGV) has been asked to investigate, after a local resident of Tavira witnessed one of the elephants of the Victor Hugo Cardinalli Circus in poor condition collapsed to the ground and remained there.

Following months of negotiation, two lions and a tiger were rescued from a traveling circus in Portugal & arrived safely at the ADI Rescue Centre at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre in South Africa.

A rescue operation is underway to take two lions and tigers from a life of misery with the circus in Portugal, to live out their lives at the new ADI Rescue Centre in South Africa.

Last year, ADI and Portugal’s ANIMAL launched a Stop Circus Suffering campaign in Portugal based on evidence collected inside Portuguese circuses by ADI Field Officers.
