Stop Circus Suffering

TODAY, the Austrian Constitutional Court in Vienna announced that it had thrown out the application by Circus Krone to overturn Austria’s ban on wild animals in circuses.

As many of our supporters will have seen in the news, the trial of Bobby and Moira Roberts on charges under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, over the treatment of the circus elephant Anne, is imminent. The initial hearing has now been moved to 1st December.

In March 2011, a daring ADI investigation exposed the sickening abuse of Anne the elephant and other animals at Bobby Roberts’ Super Circus winter quarters in the UK.

Despite the debate in the House of Commons in June that resulted in a motion directing the Government to ban the use of wild animals in circuses before July 2012, recent Ministerial statements have indicated that Defra intend to pursue a licensing system instead.
